Ok so this isn't a book I would normally pick up, but this is why I joined an in person book club! Every month will be something different.
First things first, this was really well written... but it just wasn't for me.
We have Liv and Finn as our main characters. They meet one summer right before Livs world implodes and they end up kind of bonded through that pain. The book flicks between past and present, until eventually we catch up to the current timeline. Liv and Finn just have different priorities and paths they are wandering, so they just meet up every summer. I think I just found them both frustrating, and then the end even more frustrating.
Overall, once I got stuck into it, I did read it until I was finished. Paige Toon writes in a way that makes you want to carry on reading.
I'll start by saying that I am loving book club purely because it is making me pick up books I wouldn't normally look twice at. But that being said, I STRUGGLED with this one. And not because of the story, but just because I really struggle with third person and also books that flit between timelines. I did say 2024 would be the year I got over my third person aversion... I just haven't gotten there yet.
This book was a slow starter, I didn't properly get into it until at least Chapter 6 (and not just because of the third person writing, but that did set me back a bit). Once the sisters got together, I felt like it then picked up and got going. Was it obvious? Yea, it was. But the writing was really good and I did enjoy the storyline. It had one surprise I wasn't expecting, which I weirdly loved (because it took me by surprise!).
If you are after a good thriller/mystery and don't mind third person, I'd definitely say to give this one a go.
